Time For School? 4 Reasons To Include A Visit To The Doctor

Health & Medical Blog

If your kids are getting ready to go back to school, now's the time to touch base with their primary care physician. A visit to the doctor can help your kids avoid health-related problems all year long. Read the list provided below. Here are four important reasons to take your kids to the doctor now that they're heading back to school.

Start School with a Physical

Now that your kids are going back to school, this is the perfect time to get them started with a school physical. You might not realize this, but kids should start each school year with a physical. During your kids' school physicals, they'll get their eyes, ears, and teeth checked. But, the doctor will also check your kids' hearts and lungs. These comprehensive exams help detect issues that could pose problems for your kids.

Check Vaccine Status

If your kids are heading back to school, now's the time to check their vaccine records. Some childhood diseases are making a comeback. That's why your kids need to be up-to-date on their vaccinations. Some of the diseases that are on the rise include smallpox, measles, and mumps. If you're not sure about your kids' vaccination status, now's the time to schedule an appointment with their primary care physician. Their doctor can get them caught up on their vaccinations before they head back to the classroom. Plus, this is a good time to get your kids their flu shots.

Monitor Classroom Bugs

Now that your kids are going back to school, you need to think about those pesky classroom health issues. You never know when your kids are going to bring home things like ringworm, scabies, or lice. Ringworm is a fungal infection that causes a circular rash. Scabies is an infestation of tiny mites that burrow under the skin. Lice are parasites that attach themselves to their human host. These pests can cause serious problems for your kids. Luckily, your primary care physician can provide treatment for these problems. That way, they won't affect your child's education.

Update Medications

If any of your kids take medications on a daily basis, schedule an appointment with a primary care physician. There could have been changes to your kids' medical conditions over the summer. These changes might affect their medications. One of those changes could include the recommended dosages for their medications. A back-to-school exam will allow the doctor to update the medications your kids take.
