Dealing With Growing Pains

Health & Medical Blog

Has your child ever woken up at night complaining about pains in their legs? If so, there is no need to worry. This is a common occurrence that happens in 25% to 40% of children between the ages of 3 to 5 and again at 8 to 12 years old. While the name refers to a pain that is likely onset by a growth spurt, there is no research suggesting this to be the case. In fact, most experts believe it is caused by muscle soreness due to extreme physical activity. While it may be nothing to worry about, it can also be very painful to your child. Here are some ways to help your child deal with these pains.

Chiropractic Care

Nerve system stress can cause these pains your child is complaining about. If your child's spine is misaligned, they can feel pains in their legs from time to time. A chiropractic adjustment can help relieve nerve stress from the body. During the session with your chiropractor, they will do a visual inspection of your child's spine to see where the misalignment is. Once found, they will work with the body in order to realign the spine into a more normal position. The pain can be eliminated immediately in some cases. If you have more questions about this, consider speaking with a doctor from Exelbert Chiropractic.

Parental Care

You don't have to send your child to the doctor over growing pains. There are other options to getting your child feeling better. In order to relieve some of the discomfort your child is experiencing from the growing pains, you can massage their legs. You can also place a heating pad on the legs to help soothe the pain. It is important to encourage your child to stretch their legs often in order to keep their muscles loose and their legs flexible. You can consult with your doctor about whether or not their pain warrants taking a pain reliever. This can help your child get through some of the aching until it passes.

Watching the Signs

While it is common for children at this age to experience leg pain, there are signs that may indicate a bigger issue. When you start to see symptoms that include rashes, fevers, swelling, or redness, you should take your child to the doctor immediately. These could signal that there are bigger issues than just growing pains occurring in your child.
